Virtual world art at SF MOMA

Earlier this week I had an amazing opportunity to help bridge two important locations in the world of art. Now, this is an area where I have absolutely zero credentials to be participating, and yet, somehow, it seemed to work. It worked in particular thanks to three virtual world arts celebrities who graciously agreed to help out

My friend and fellow NMC Board member, Peter Samis, invited me to come and give a talk and demo at SFMOMA, where he is a curator. This opportunity sprang from a simple discussion we had about how art is flourishing madly in Second Life, where there are hundreds of galleries, and where the whole environment can be seen as an art form. Peter suggested that I come by the museum some time and give him a tour and introduction. We set a date and Peter mentioned to a few colleagues that I would be dropping by. With that, I actually found myself in a major museum, giving a large-screen demo to about 25 arts professionals!

The basic tour took us from virtual representations of real world art works, such as the Dresden Old Masters Picture Gallery to things that could only be created in the virtual world. The cool thing was that three artist friends appeared along the way, to help out with the virtual tour. We met Jeffrey Lipsky (Filthy Fluno) at his Artropolis Island, where we heard his story of success as a virtual and real world artist. Richard Minsky (ArtWorld Market) joined us there as I passed around a signed, numbered copy of his book length special iss of SLART. We rounded out the 90-minute session with a visit to DC Spensley’s (DanCoyote Antonelli) magnificent sim-size site dedicated to his vision of hyperformalism in virtual world art.

I can’t speak for all the participants, but I sure had a great time. I never fail to have a blast with these virtual world experiences, and invariably come out exhausted and glowing!

    Hi, Doug.

Just found your blog, thanks to Facebook. Nice to see you “here.”

Your notes on business architecture are most interesting. As I’ve said to you before, this subject is something that I recognized intuitively in my previous incarnation as a state agency employee. Putting these concepts into words is much needed, particularly for the benefit of those who are business leaders. Intuition is insufficient without concrete articulation.

Keep up the good work. Your writing style is a delight! I hope that your blog will attract many readers.

    ‘Bye for now…
